Saz's Barbecue Fame is Well Earned
Jim Ohlschmidt/ Dining Out/ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
There are certain, well-known Milwaukee restaurants that have woven themselves into the very fabric of the city and its culture. While they may not always be the best culinary landmarks, they have developed a special combination of atmosphere and food that attracts people who regard it as a fun place to hang out as much as enjoy a good dinner -- or "supper" as they say in Milwaukee.
Saz's State House is such a place. Located in an old three-story building almost under the Hawley Road overpass on West State Street, both the location and the interior emulate the kind of blue-collar industry and Germanic antiquity associated wtih old Milwaukee. Old woodwork and new brass accents create most of the look inside, with old terrazzo floors that barely show the years of foot traffic.
It's easy to see why Saz's ribs are well-liked. The rack of ribs that arrived with the combo were nearly perfect. While the tender, lean rib meat came away easily from the bones, it was that all important crunchy, charred surface that carried the smoke flavor and made them absolutely delectable to our palate. We did not leave hungry. Rated Four Stars.
Saz Pizazz by John Aboya
For years, patrons of Saz's State House on the West State Street have raved about the barbecue sauce Saz serves on ribs and shredded pork sandwiches.
The State Street bar and restaurant has long been estabilished as the "place to be" for many followers of the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks, Green Bay Packers and Marquette Warriors -- among other sports teams. The personable Saz has a natural affinity for the sporting crowd, and spends many of his waking hours shaking hands and mingling with the thousands of folks who "like to be seen at Saz's."
