Chris Wright - Wins Ocean Spray Cranberry Contest

Chef Tyler Florence Announces Winners of Ocean Spray's Ultimate Cranberry Recipe Contest LAKEVILLE-MIDDLEBORO, Mass., Oct. 7

LAKEVILLE-MIDDLEBORO, Mass., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- This year's most innovative recipes featuring the sweet tang of the cranberry were recognized last night as Celebrity Chef Tyler Florence announced the winners of Ocean Spray's third annual Ultimate Cranberry Recipe Contest. Two winners received grand prizes of $25,000 for developing innovative cranberry recipes showcasing the versatility of the beloved American fruit.

Patrice Hurd of Bemidji, Minn., won the consumer contest with her Cranberry Bacon Brunch Scones with Cranberry Pecan Cream Cheese recipe and Chris Wright of Saz's in Waukesha, Wis., is the foodservice winner with his Cranberry Wontons with Cranberry Jalapeno Jelly Dipping Sauce recipe.

Grand prize winners were awarded their checks during a private cocktail function at 620 Loft & Garden in New York's Rockefeller Center. The reception was held in conjunction with the kick-off of Ocean Spray's "Big Apple Bog," where more than 2,000 pounds of glimmering cranberries are on display in a free-standing urban cranberry bog in Rockefeller Center

"All of the finalists incorporated cranberries into recipes in very clever ways - it was difficult to choose just one winning recipe for each category," said Tyler Florence. "Ultimately, all of the judges felt that Patrice Hurd and Chris Wright's recipe's best showcased the year-round versatility of the cranberry with their Cranberry Bacon Brunch Scones with Cranberry Pecan Cream Cheese and Cranberry Wontons with Cranberry Jalapeno Jelly Dipping Sauce respectively."

The contest was open to anyone with a passion for the little, red wonderberry. Home cooks were encouraged to enter the consumer category while food professionals - from established chefs to recent culinary graduates - were encouraged to submit for the foodservice division. The contest attracted more than 2,000 recipes displaying the fruit's true versatility including delicious drinks, decadent desserts and tasty entrees.

"Ocean Spray growers have harvested the finest cranberries for our products for 80 years, so you'd think that we'd have seen all that you can do with the cranberry by now," said Larry Martin, vice president of marketing at Ocean Spray. "While cranberries are often recognized as the unofficial, official fruit of the holidays it's clear that the variety and dimension they add to everyday dishes makes them a year-round favorite."

Recipes were judged on creativity, use of product, taste, overall appearance and ease of preparation. The esteemed panel of judges, including acclaimed Chef Tyler Florence, Chef Chris Gatto of UNO Chicago Grill and Woman's Day Food Director Jackie Plant, evaluated eight cranberry recipes (four finalists per category) during a cook-off at De Gustibus Cooking School in New York City on October 5.

The winning recipes, along with the top four finalist recipes from each category, are also featured on www.oceanspray.com and www.oceansprayfoodservice.com. Previous years' winning recipes include Roasted Cranberry Quesadillas, Pork Tenderloin with Cranberry Mole and Cranberry Salsa, Pan Seared Chicken Breasts with CranCherry(®) Sauce and Bleu Cheese Crumbles and a Cranberry Mojito.

For more delicious cranberry recipes, visit www.oceanspray.com to request or download Ocean Spray's new "Unofficial, Official Fruit of the Holidays . . . and Everyday" recipe booklet. Recipe booklets will be available in November.

Saz's Catering - Official Caterer of the ABC Good Morning America
"At Your House" Series

Good Morning America with Saz's Catering

On Friday, April 24th, we received a call from a representative of the Good Morning America production crew, inquiring as to our availability to cater a "BBQ Picnic" for a "specal" group of people at a park in Waukesha on the following Tuesday. Now those of you that know us can guess that our answer would naturally, be "yes, what time would you like us to start the picnic?..."

Well, the story climbs from here. The first thing that was said, was "this is a very special event and you cannot tell ANYONE about this.... we looked at your website and we liked what we saw about your BBQ catering. Our group may be about 300 people and it's for the "At Your House Series". We just completed a contest and a lucky family in Waukesha has been chosen as the winning entrant".

OK, 300 people, contest winner, picnic in the park... nothing out of the ordinary. We've catered larger events and this should go fairly smoothly. That was soon to change.

For the next couple days we began a dialog with the main producers of the At Your House program. A crew was flying in from New York and a site producer has just landed in Milwaukee and needs to meet with us. Now. This little BBQ in park was beginning to take on a new life of its own.

Official Caterers for Good Morning America in MilwaukeeGood Morning America (GMA) producers now started laying the ground work, telling us that there were 5 locations around the country chosen for a potential "Live" broadcast BBQ in a residential setting. In each location, GMA went to all the neighbors saying they were throwing a BBQ and you all are invited. Well this little "You all are invited" got out to the local newspapers, saying GMA was throwing a party for Waukesha.... wait... what??? We got on the phone to GMA and mentioned this little "catch" to the party. Well, shortly thereafter a retraction was listed on the online source.

The secrecy over the whole event was that the "someone in Waukesha" was chosen as the winner and that the entire Good Morning America Crew was about to decend on our little community - and Saz's Catering is running point. Diane Sawyer, Robin, Chris and Sam were on their way.

Saz's Catering Picnic for Good Morning AmericaWell being what we are good at , we cranked it up a notch and made it known that this little party was growing. 300 people will probably be in the first 30 minutes. Boy were we right. By the time the picnic was underway and th GMA morning show team showed up to work the crowd, the party swelled to well over 1300 people in just a couple hours.

3 commercial BBQ grills were cranking out the food as fast as we could and another truck load of supplies was enroute. Waukesha DID show up for the party.

This was only the beginning to our involvement. The production crew and setup teams (around 250 in all) were in need of breakfast (at 2:00 a.m., mind you) and there was going to be another breakfast for a large group around 8:00 a.m.. And by the way, "Can your Chef assist Sandra Lee in her cooking show that will be airing live in the morning on our Good Morning America Show....? Wait... what?

Waukesha At Your House BBQ with Saz's and Good Morning AmericaOnly one answer to all the above - "SURE".

All we can say is that there was so much happening in only a few days and our Saz's Hospitality and Catering team really surprised and impressed the whole GMA product and lead teams.

And to quote our main contact, our friend Anthony from the GMA Crew -

"To the Unshakable Saz’s Staff,

Thank you so much for all that you did to make our GMA visit to Waukesha, WI one to remember!

From the last-minute requests, to the emergency food reinforcements, you handled it professionally with a can-do attitude and a smile.  You have no idea how much more pleasant your staff made our “invasion.”  It’s not every day you feed an entire community!!  Well, not for us anyway…

Please extend an extra thank you to Mr. Paris for his amazing execution of the Sandra Lee segment.  It looked, and tasted, just like it would have on our GMA set.  No one ever would’ve thought that it was put together in the middle of North Racine Avenue at 5:00 in the morning.

You guys were great from start to finish.  I really appreciate every single thing you did to go above and beyond the call of duty.  I now truly know why everyone says, “Saz’s is the FINEST!”

Thank you from the entire GMA staff!"

Best,

Anthony

And to all at the Good Morning America show and friends -

"Thank you for choosing Saz's Catering - we deliver nothing but "The Finest"

Saz's Sauces are Internationally Famous

When former Milwaukeean, Lynn Hemera (Torgerson) moved to New Zealand, she knew there was one thing missing from her favorite meals prepared on the "Barbee" - Saz's BBQ Sauces.

So when she wanted to surprise her husband with Saz's Sauces, a chartered plane trip to Milwaukee was the first thought, but time was not in her favor. As a back-up plan, she thought, 'Could Saz's Award Winning BBQ Sauces be flown to me Down Under? Barbecue season is starting now, and no one we know is flying down to see us anytime soon, what shall we do?'

After a few emails and phone calls, we decided to give this a try. With a little research and pricing, USPS was chosen as the most economical way to get our Saz's Sauces to the southern hemisphere. The Post Office has a Priority Mail International Flat Rate Box that holds a maximum of 20 pounds and for less than $50, we just might be able to squeeze a few bottles of sauce into the box and fly this package down to the Kiwi's in New Zealand.

Well, as it turns out, we were able to get 6 bottles of Saz's Original and a couple bottle of Saz's Sassy Sauce comfortably packed into the box. After filling out a Customs Declaration form in triplicate, we turned over the box to the USPS and bid the package farewell. If all goes according to plan Lynn would get her Saz's Sauces in about 6-10 days.

Our next email was sent to Lynn letting her know that the merchandise had been shipped and she can expect to get the package in about 6 days. We left instructions to let us know when it arrived so that we would be able to tell how long it actually took, what was the condition of the package upon arrival and did anyone in the postal employee chain help themselves to a bottle a Saz's Sauce enroute to New Zealand?

And so... here is the actual communication from Lynn - 5 days later:

"This is to let you know that the package arrived this afternoon with all the bottles intact. (So we can be grateful that the US and NZ postal service were honorable and didn't try to pinch a bottle of the Finest!)  Thanks so much for arranging this for me and I will be sure to send you some stories and photos soon.  The timing is great and my husband didn't see the parcel so it will really be a surprise.  Over the weekend, he was whinging about not having any Saz's sauce and it was all I could do to keep my mouth shut!   Thanks and as I said, I will be back in touch with you again - relaying bbq tales from DownUnder.   Have a great Christmas!"

We look forward to hearing from the Torgerson's in New Zealand and will post their pictures as soon as they arrive.

Merry Christmas Down Under to Lynn, Brian and son Jimmy. From all of us at Saz's.

Saz’s Catering to Travel to Texas to Assist in Emergency Relief Efforts from Hurricane IKE

In the wake of Hurricane IKE, a selected team of Saz’s Catering personnel heads into the aftermath to provide daily meals to a camp of 500 utility repair personnel.

Saz’s Catering, owned by local restaurateur, Steve Sazama and operated by Catering Director, Joe Brueggemann, have formed a team of operations management, chefs and catering crew members to travel to Woodville Texas, about 80 miles northeast of Houston. The lead operations team will travel into the business part of the hurricane zone to put preliminary plans in motion. Following the lead team will be a contingency of catering trucks loaded with essential equipment and supplies that will depart on Monday, September 14 and rendezvous with the lead team.

John Schlueter, owner of Karl’s Event Rental, based Milwaukee, is coordinating and Saz's equipment staging for hurricane IKE reliefproviding the encampment logistics and has contacted Saz’s Catering to assist in the relief efforts. “Knowing our abilities and expertise to set-up a remote kitchen, and to feed thousands of people, John called us to see if we could put this together on moments notice”, said Joe Brueggemann, Catering Director. “We pulled together our team from Saz’s entire operations and immediately began laying this out”. The first meal for the utility workers will need to be ready to serve on Wednesday evening, September 17.

“We have done many events over the years that required us to set-up fully functioning kitchens in remote areas,” said Steve Sazama. “Thousands of people have been served at one time at these events, so we have a good working knowledge on this type and scale of food operation.”

Saz’s Catering staff will provide three meals per day and may be at the location from 7 to 28 days. “Karl’s disaster relief coordinates set-up of sleeping, showers, laundry and food facilities for events like this.” said Joe. “They (Karl’s) are currently at multiple locations in Texas. We’ll design the menus and help provide the means to make sure these people have nutritious meals to keep them going all hours of the day.”

Saz’s Catering, Wisconsin’s largest off-site catering service, caters over 1500 events each year. A division of Saz’s, also known for Saz’s State House Restaurant, and Saz’s BBQ Products.

Saz’s Catering Wins Over Adversity -

Many of you by now have heard or read that we had a fire at Saz’s Catering. This is correct.

That being said, our Catering business is still in full production servicing all of our clients. We are “business as usual” with events now on the books and are taking on new events each day. Food production is shared with the cooking facilities at the State House Restaurant and at a nearby, off-site food production facility.

We won’t be missing a beat while our catering facility is being cleaned and repaired. It takes a bit more than a fire to keep Saz’s Catering down. (Albeit doing a dance or two)

Cause of the fire is being confirmed, but appears electrical in nature. Fortunately, the damage has been confined to a non-production area of the building. This does not interfere with the restaurant, as that is a separate building and operation all together.

We want to thank the Saz’s customer, whomever you are, for spotting the sparks coming from the power terminal on the catering building, and informing our staff at the restaurant. We would be telling a different story if the fire had progressed for a few more minutes.

A heartfelt "Thank You" goes out to all of our friends, vendors and customers who continue to offer help and concern for our loss.

'Mon Ami' - Wendell Thomas Gives Saz's Burger Price a Pass!

Not one to "Mess with the High Life", Saz got the OK from the Miler Brewing Company Spokesman, Wendell Thomas. Our burgers are priced right "ya'll are NOT crazy" and won't be cleaning out our stock of Miller High Life.

Wendell gave a "big" cheer for the Packers and posed next to the world's largest Favre Bobblehead.

Wendell took a pause with one of our kitchen chefs, Elton. "Pardon Moi" but he is a big fella next to our skinny chef.

Thomas joined Saz's for lunch and paused to take a few photos with us. Thomas seemed like just one of the boys from 'Miller Brands' and wore the same uniform as the Miiller delivery guys.

SUMMERFEST - US BANK CHAMPIONSHIP OF MILWAUKEE - WISCONSIN STATE FAIR

And let's throw in a company picnic for 18,000 people in the middle. Not to mention all of the other parties Saz's Catering has in the mix. We are feeding "cities" of people this summer - WOW! Tens of Thousands of people.

.

Summerfest has kicked in and Saz's serves up our famous foods. Stop on down to Saz's Restaurant in the Miller Lite Oasis area on the Summerfest grounds and enjoy your favorite Mozzarella Marinara, Festival Famous Sour Cream and Chive Fries and Famous BBQ Ribs, BBQ Rib Sandwiches, Grilled Chicken Sandwiches, Combo Platters and more.

New this year - try our Saz's Southwest Rolls. Stuffed with PepperJack Cheese, Beans, Cilantro, Jelapeno and a taste of Leinenkugel beer - sure to be a hit.

Here's a bit of trivia for ya - If you were to take all the Saz's Mozzarella sticks made at Summerfest over the years, and line them up end to end, they would reach from the Earth to the Moon. Now that's a lot of Mozzarella Marinara!

When you on the Summerfest Grounds - all of Saz's great Appetizers are served up here and ready to satisfy your tastebuds. Sour Cream and Chive Fries, White Cheddar Cheese Curds and a selection of other fine treats.

Saz’s participates as a sponsor in the Wave Reality All-Stars Weekend
March 17-19, 2006

Reality television fans, it’s time to gear up for the Milwaukee Wave Reality All-Stars Weekend, scheduled for March 17-19. The three-day event will feature castaways from reality television participating in a fundraising dinner reception and celebrity soccer game. Zohn’s appearances for the weekend will support Grassroot Soccer (http://www.grassrootsoccer.org), a global AIDS prevention organization, which teams up soccer stars to deliver prevention messages to children in the world’s most HIV affected countries.

On Saturday evening, Miller Brewing Company will host a dinner reception and silent auction featuring Zohn, Morasca and a number of other castaways. The event will be catered by Saz’s and held in the corporate pub from 7-10 p.m.. There will also be a special VIP Meet and Greet from 6 – 7 p.m. with hand passed hor d’oeuvres in the caves. In addition to Zohn and Morasca, castaways scheduled to appear are: Tom “Big Tom” Buchanan, Chad Crittenden, Chris Daugherty, Rudy Boesch, Bobby Jon Drinkard, Ian Rosenberger, Leann Slaby, Lex van den Berghe, Julie Barry, Jennifer Lyon and Tina Wesson. Tickets for the event are $50 (standard) and $100 (VIP); call the Wave office (414-224-9283) for tickets and more information. All of the funds raised from this event will go directly to Grassroot Soccer.

Miller Brewing Company is a sponsor of the Milwaukee Wave and an active supporter of efforts to prevent and treat AIDS. The company is hosting and supporting the event as part of its corporate social investment platform, Miller REACH™, which focuses on five primary causes: Responsibility, Employment, AIDS/HIV, Cultural Diversity and Heritage Initiatives.

The weekend continues with another full day of activities on Sunday. Zohn will drop in at Saz’s for brunch from 11 a.m. - 12 :30 p.m. to celebrate the restaurant’s 30th anniversary. From there, he will take in the Milwaukee Wave’s contest against the Philadelphia KiXX (kickoff at 1:05 p.m.) before taking the field in an exciting post-game match featuring Reality All-Stars and Wave Legends. In addition to the castaways mentioned above, Wave Legends Art Kramer, Steve Morris and current Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer are scheduled to participate along with current U.S. National Team member and Menomonee Falls native, Leslie Osborne.

“As both Miller Brewing Company and the Milwaukee Wave have, for many years, been great clients and customers at both Saz’s Catering and Saz’s State House Restaurant, it was a natural fit for us to become involved with them in such a great, charitable venture,” Jim Kasper, Sales and Marketing Director, Saz’s Catering, said. “As Saz’s is now celebrating our 30th Anniversary serving the Milwaukee community, the Grassroots Soccer Reality All Stars Festival, became an ideal opportunity for us to offer our talents and give back to a great cause.”

“CBS 58 is pleased to be a presenting sponsor of the Reality All-Stars weekend,” Jim Hall, CBS 58 General Manager, said. “CBS is home to Survivor so it is only fitting for us to be involved as Milwaukee plays host to thirteen former castaways. But our reason for involvement goes beyond that. We feel strongly about Ethan Zohn’s Grassroot Soccer and what the organization is doing in the fight against AIDS.”

Admission to the Reality All-Stars/Wave Legends game is free with ticket purchases to the Milwaukee Wave vs. Philadelphia KiXX game. “The Wave has pledged a portion of the ticket sales from Sunday’s game to Grassroot Soccer,” Milwaukee Wave COO, Mike Lafferty said. “Another full house is expected as a result of the Reality All-Stars game combined with the Keith Tozer bobble-head and halftime ceremonies honoring Tozer for his 600th win.”

“I’m excited about the way the Milwaukee community has embraced the efforts of Grassroot Soccer,” Zohn said. “I am also impressed by the outpouring of support from the local businesses that have generously sponsored the weekend’s events, allowing us to raise funds for such a good cause.”

Tickets to the Wave’s Friday night game against the Chicago Storm and Sunday’s Wave vs. Philadelphia KiXX and Reality All-Stars games can be purchased by calling the Milwaukee Wave ticket office (414-224-9283), or stopping by Saz’s State House Restaurant (5539 W. State St.) or the Miller Visitors Center (4251 W. State St.).
