Hot Food for Hot Games
The gang is coming over for game day and you want food that will heat up the party. Whether your guests prefer Mexican, Thai, Indian or Jamaican flavors, adding spice to your dish can make it more fun to cook - and to eat. Of course not everyone loves hot foods, so an assortment of offerings is always a considerate approach to menu planning. Here are a few fun ideas and some spicy facts to get things rolling.
Spice Info Bits
Here are a few essential spices that our featured regions use to flavor cuisine – just a dash of info to help you stock your spice pantry. Not all of these add heat, but they blend to create the flavors of the region.
Mexican food favors chile Powder (a blend of dried chiles), oregano, cumin, garlic and epazote.
In Thai food, spices are often made into pastes, which may include shallots, garlic, red or green chilies, Thai chili powder, peppercorns, galangal (a relative of ginger), basil and turmeric.

Indian food features Cayenne pepper, chilies, chili powder, cilantro, cardamom, cumin, garlic, ginger, nutmeg, mustard seeds, peppercorns, saffron, turmeric, paprika, curry leaves and curry powder.
Jamaican seasoning includes the popular Jamaican jerk seasoning – typically a blend of thyme, allspice, Caribbean red peppers (a.k.a. Scotch bonnet peppers – if you can’t find either use hot pepper flakes, paprika & cayenne), cumin, nutmeg, onion powder salt, pepper and garlic.
Of course there are many other deliciously hot ethnic cuisines – but you have to start somewhere. And now for a few game worthy appetizer ideas
Football Fiesta – try Flautas (mini-rolled tacos), Quesadillas, and Guacamole. Saveur.com has a delicious selection of recipes including one for Chicken Flautas you might want to try
Thai Touchdown Party – feature Satay Party Skewers, Thai Spring Rolls, Daikon Cakes or a Vegie Platter with Thai Peanut Dip. Satay is particularly festive and the food network has a fun one at Satay Party Skewers. You might also try Daikon Cakes from Epicurious
Indian Interception Celebration – catch some attention with small bites like mini kabobs, curry soup shots and if you’re really feeling adventurous Pakoras and Samosas, which are filled pastries that are fried crisp and served with flavorful sauces. When you need delicious Indian recipes a good source is IndianFoodSite.com and here’s a link to some fun Appetizers
Caribbean Checkdown Bash makes short passes fun with easy-to-pass bites. Consider Jerk Chicken Skewers, Peel & Eat Hot Pepper Shrimp, and Plantain Chips. Serve with a fun Jamaican Rum drink – try shaking orange juice, pineapple juice and Bacardi Citron with ice and pour in a glass over shaved ice.
